About

Almost Japanese is a lifestyle e-zine covering all aspects of Japanese culture in and outside of Japan, created by and dedicated to those with a passion for Japan. Information is gathered and written by numerous Japan-enthusiasts who are part-Japanese, nisei (second generation), sansei (third generation), or not Japanese at all. Some are living in Japan, while others are across the world looking into Japan as an outsider. It’s everything Japanese, from an ‘Almost Japanese’ perspective.

Our focus is to look at ‘Culture’ as the greatest export of Japan. From anime, cars, fashion to food, it’s never just a new product the world is interested in, it’s the emergence of an entirely new, social following that creates a very-Japanese cultural phenomenon worldwide. Japanese car culture spurred a growth of import car-enthusiasts in North America. The gothic-lolita look of Harajuku and the glittery ultra-feminine fashions of Shibuya and Shinjuku simply could not be ignored by the eyes of Hollywood. The tantalizing array of dishes and tasty drinks of Japanese tapas bars, izakayas, started a new wave of restaurants across Vancouver and New York City. By gathering information from both Japanese and non-Japanese sites, from people of all different background and interests, Almost Japanese looks at how Japanese culture has been maintained or altered, as it transcends borders and translates into different languages.
