The Super GT series, formerly known as the All-Japan Grand Touring Car Championship (1993) or JGTC is a grand touring car series promoted by the GT-Association. It is officially authorized by the Japan Automobile Federation and is also directly authorized by FIA.

The JGTC is run by the GT Association, which was founded in 1994 as a successor to the failed Japan Sport Prototype Car Championship. The failure of JSPC provoked various companies and organizations in the automotive and racing industries to establish a series that gave a better return to sponsors. The GT Association found an over-reliance on technology that led to an outburst of costs, eventually killing the series.  JGTC find out an optimal balance between technology, human drama and entertainment.

World-renowned Japanese race tracks like the Twin Ring Motegi, Fuji Speedway and Suzuka Circuit, originally, featured the annual race series.  Since the year 2000 however, rounds have been hosted on tracks outside Japan like Sepang International Circuit and the California Speedway as an exhibition race.

The cars are divided into two groups: Firstly, GT500 which is the top class in Super GT, with cars powered by 3.4L V8 engines featuring loose regulations when compared to other GT classifications.  They are the fastest GT racing cars in the world, fully race prepared with power limited to 500PS and acquire only aesthetic similarities with their road-going counterparts. Secondly, GT300, are much more regulated than their GT500 counterparts and share extensively more similarities to their road-going versions. It is a category that features the most number of different cars in the world. While engine specifications observe minimal regulations, power output is limited to 300PS.

Each car in the series is obliged to have 2 drivers. For qualifying, drivers needs to hold a valid sporting license of International grade C or above. However, official qualifying is divided into two one hour sessions. Each session is divided into three 20-minute segments, for GT500, one for GT300 and one joint segment respectively. The race distance is not less than 250km and no more than 1,000 km. The starting procedure begins with an 8-minute warm-up, 45 minutes prior to the start of the race.

Since its inception, the Super GT has grown from strength to strength and continues to pursue its goal to “Challenge the World” and is establishing itself as one of the world’s most exciting race series.
