Photos: Japanese Konbini (Convenience Store)
Always a highlight of visiting Japan is peeping into the konbinis (convenience store) to look at the variety of products, their display and packaging. Here’s some quick shots I took while picking up some alcoholic bevvy’s at the konbini - yes they sell alcohol.
For some reason, I forgot to capture packaged onigiris (rice balls, a staple of any Japanese konbini). . . my bad.

Very left=energy drinks, middle=yogurt/jello/pudding desserts, very right=milk, yogurt drinks, and juice

Top four rows are packaged coffee and milk tea drinks. SO delicious!!!!!!

For breakfast, lunch, and for snacks, Japanese love a good konbini bun/bread on the go.

Craving for a frankfurter, karaage chicken, potato croquettes or fries? Pretty much anything to satisfy midnight hunger is at the konbini.

Very left: steamed white BBQ pork buns (Nikuman) Right: Oden (Japanese winter dish)

Oden up-close
What is Oden? Oden is a traditional Japanese hot pot dish, eaten mostly during the winter time. The dish includes daikon radish, hanpen (fish cakes), chikuwa (fish cakes), boiled eggs, konnyaku (yam cake), etc. These ingredients are simmered in kelp-based soup stock for hours. It is usually cooked in a big ceramic pot at home, but nowadays, with just a quick-stop at the konbini and you can enjoy the taste of your mother’s homemade Oden in an instant. . . . Oden and Japanese sake is a superb combination for chilly winter nights.

*tear* … I miss the conbinis
*moves back to Japan*
…sure beats stale krispy kremes and salmonella hot dogs! haha
I’m craving konbini food right now - I would get an onigiri, a hanpen from the oden section, a cold milk tea drink . . . .. .
Lisa, I should not have opened this article right before bed time…*growl*
Hey Lisa,
Japanese combinis rock, I am living in Japan now and they are gold. Even the 7/11s here are way better than the ones in the states. However, that oden always looks highly questionable, so I have never indulged. But a couple tuna or salmon onigiri always hit the spot. Anyway, rockin site Lisa…Always enjoyable and helps me kill time at work!
